Margaritaville Hotel Kansas City celebrates development milestone

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Developers say something bigger and better is taking shape on the old Schlitterbahn site near Kansas Speedway and the Legends Outlets.

Soon, you can add the Margaritaville Resort to the mix, and the developers offered a look at all the progress that’s been made on Wednesday where crews placed one of the final walls on the $150 million hotel.

Co-owner Greg Maday said it was a moment about four years in the making. Between a non-alcoholic margarita machine, lots of excited people, and a festive parrot named Captain Flint, the day was a full-fledged celebration.

“Every day you can decide are you going to be happy or not, and this is about being happy,” Maday said.

Margaritaville Hotel Kansas City will have 229 rooms. Ownership partner Mark Moberly said crews are about 40% finished with construction. The hotel will feature an indoor pool, outdoor resort-style pool, retail and family entertainment centers, along with a bar and grill that’s open to the general public.

“Margaritaville is a state of mind as much as it is a location. We will have a fantastic location. When you walk through those doors, the smells, the sounds and the tastes, everything you see visually, you’re going to feel like you’ve been transported to paradise,” Moberly said.

The hotel will open where Schlitterbahn water park used to be. While Wednesday was a celebration, everyone took a moment of silence to remember Caleb Schwab, a 10-year-old boy who died on a waterslide in 2016.

Moberly said the space will also be the only meeting and convention hotel in Wyandotte County. Margaritaville hospitality says it’s looking to hire 250 by next spring, with an expected open date in the summer of 2025.
