Marcus Crump drops out of special election for Lee County supervisor

Sep. 14—TUPELO — Marcus Crump is withdrawing his candidacy from the special election to fill a seat on the Lee County Board of Supervisors.

Crump, a former justice court judge and deputy county coroner, told the Daily Journal that he notified the Lee County Circuit Clerk's Office on both Monday and Tuesday of his desire to remove his name from the ballot.

Crump, a 48-year-old registered nurse, said he felt like he was needed more at his family's medical clinic than on the campaign trail.

"With COVID fluctuating like it is, I felt like I just didn't have the time to put into (the supervisor race) like I wanted to do," Crump said.

Now that Crump has withdrawn his name from the ballot, there are seven people whose names will appear on the ballot.

The candidates in the race are as follows:

— Mike Bryan

— Buddy Dickerson

— Gary Enis

— Mark Maharrey

— Larry McCord

— Tony Roper

— Wesley Webb

In a special election, all candidates must run as independents, meaning there are no party primaries. All qualified candidates will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot.

If no single candidate receives a majority of the vote, there will be a runoff election on Nov. 23.
