Delta Co. child abuse advocates hold vigil, say over 200 local cases last year

ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) – April is child abuse prevention month, and The Delta Regional Child Advocacy Center held a child abuse awareness walk and vigil in Ludington Park in Escanaba this afternoon.

The purpose of the march was to draw attention to the hundreds of cases of child abuse reported each year in Delta County. Organizers of the march hope to raise awareness of this problem and to educate the public on what resources are available and what to do if you suspect child abuse in your community. Advocacy center Director, Sarah Sorensen explains the extent of child abuse in Delta County.

“Child abuse and neglect, it’s all over the place, including the Upper Peninsula.  At the Delta Regional Child Advocacy Center, we had over 200 cases last year just for Delta County that related to child abuse, neglect and children who have been witness to a crime. So, we really feel like it’s important to spread awareness of child abuse and neglect and to also talk about prevention, to be able to help prevent more of these issues.” Said Sorensen.

A vigil was held after the walk, in remembrance of children who have been victims of child abuse in Delta County this year. This Summer, the center will be placing blue and silver pinwheels throughout the county as a reminder of their mission.
