March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Friday is a special day for those who served during the Vietnam War. March 29 was designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day after former U.S. president Donald J. Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 into law.

National archives recorded a total of 58,220 U.S. military casualties during the Vietnam War, and 355 of them were from San Diego County. National Vietnam War Veterans Day honors all servicemembers, living or deceased, who served during what has been widely regarded as one of the nation’s costliest conflicts in history.

According to the latest data recorded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, California has one of the highest living veteran populations in the country. Of the 1.6 million living veterans in California who were recorded in 2020, more than 536,000 served during the Vietnam War era.

Meanwhile, data for San Diego County showed more than 225,000 living veterans who have served during various wars and peacetimes in the area as of last September.

On Friday, the U.S.S. Midway Museum honored Vietnam-era veterans with a flight-deck commemoration ceremony that included a wreath-laying and a missing-man flyover. The event featured retired Navy Commander Curt Dosé, a Navy pilot who flew nearly 200 combat missions over north Vietnam, as guest speaker.
