When Donald Trump is sworn in as the President of the United States on Friday, he will become the 45th person to occupy the highest position in the U.S. government.
Going by place of birth, Virginia is at the top of the heap with eight presidents. Just 21 states are on the list, which is mapped out below.
Here are some fun facts about the birthplace of the 44 men who have served — or are about to serve — as Commander in Chief.
More than half of all U.S. presidents come from just four states: Virginia, Ohio, New York and Massachusetts account for 24 of the 44 men who have served in the role.
There is a definite East Coast bias to the numbers. Just eight presidents were born west of the Mississippi River and only two (Richard Nixon in California and Barack Obama in Hawaii) were born west of the Rocky Mountains.
Ten of the 13 original colonies are represented — Delaware, Maryland and Rhode Island are the only three to miss out.
Seven of the first 12 presidents were born in Virginia. However, the state has produced just one Commander in Chief since: Woodrow Wilson, who served from 1913-21. The state was once the most populous in the union, until it was overtaken by New York in 1810.
Similarly, seven of the 11 men who served between 1869-1923 were born in one state: Ohio. The state didn’t produce one president before or since that period.
Vermont leads the pack in terms of presidents per capita. The small New England state has just 624,000 residents, the second-smallest population in the country (just ahead of Wyoming). Yet, it has produced two presidents: Chester A. Arthur and Calvin Coolidge.
By contrast, the three most-populous states (California, Texas and Florida) boast just three presidents total, despite a combined population of more than 87 million.
Texas has produced two presidents, but surprisingly it’s not the two men most commonly associated with the state. George H. W. Bush was born in Massachusetts, while his son was born in Connecticut. The two Texas natives to sit in the Oval Office are Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson.
