Many Portage county buildings will close Monday because of solar eclipse

Because of the increase in traffic and population predicted to visit Portage County on Monday because of the solar eclipse, the Portage County Administration Building has announced it will be closed.

Portage County commissioners said the decision to close the building on Monday was made to protect the health and safety of county employees and visitors to county facilities.

The Portage County Job and Family Services facility; Water Resources Department; Dog Warden; and Records Center also will be closed. Applicable departments will be working remotely and will be able to be reached by phone.

Solid Waste recycling pickup on Monday will start one hour early and is expected to be complete by 9 a.m.

In addition, Kent Municipal Court, Juvenile Court, Domestic Relations Court and Probate Court will close at noon Monday. Common Pleas Court will remain open after 1 p.m. with limited staff.
