What is considered a mass shooting?

Although there isn't a firm definition, the Gun Violence Archive considers a mass shooting to be when four or more people are shot in an incident, not including the shooter. This includes both fatalities and injuries.

As of May 30, the Gun Violence Archive has documented 263 shootings in the U.S. during 2023. Of those shootings 1,407 people have been injured and 327 have been killed.

At least 20 of these mass shootings took place over Memorial Day Weekend, leaving 16 people dead and over 80 injured.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 648 mass shootings in the United States last year:

  • 44,299 people overall (including 314 children and 1,361 teens) died from firearms, the GVA said, with 20,209 dead of homicide, murder or defensive gun use (DGU).

  • 24,090 gun-related deaths were ruled suicides.

  • 38,552 people were injured.
