MANTI, Utah (ABC4) — After being closed for over two years for renovations, the Manti Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will soon be open for public tours.
The public open house for the pioneer-era temple starts this Thursday, March 14, and goes through Friday, April 5, excluding Sundays. Reservations can be made online. The rededication for the temple is set for Sunday, April 21, 2024.
A majority of the focus was on preservation and upgrades on building systems and support spaces. Art conservators also worked to restore murals in the temple.
“People coming to visit will see a little bit of a refresh, a little bit of an update. We really tried to focus this project on those things that would make sure this temple is still standing in 50 years,” said Emily Utt, historic sites curator for the Church History Department.
“We’ve updated some of the mechanical systems in the building. We’ve done some waterproofing on the east side of the building,” Utt continued. “We have a new front entry that is more ADA compliant, more friendly for all of our visitors that are coming. On the inside, they’ll see a little bit of new carpet, a little bit of new paint and then the beautiful, cleaned murals.”
Other changes include furniture in select areas, a new marriage waiting room, more lockers in dressing areas and upgraded plumbing systems.
“They built very, very well in the 1880s, and our job really was to not lose that heritage, not lose that story, so we didn’t do much, because the building was so good to begin with,” Utt said.
The plans to build the temple were announced on June 25, 1875, by then-Church President Brigham Young. After more than a decade of construction, it was dedicated in 1888.
The Manti temple is one of the Church’s 28 temples currently under construction or renovation in Utah. A new temple is being built in the nearby community of Ephraim.
