How did “Lennay Kekua,” the amorphous lady friend of the former Notre Dame linebacker, make the cut? Maxim explains:
“After Manti Te’o's fake girlfriend hoax of 2012, we think it might be nice to have an invisible girl of our own to love. Why not? She’s got a ton of great qualities, including looking awesome in a bikini.”
Te’o was duped by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, an acquaintance who struck up an online, romantic relationship with him for more than a year by pretending to be an attractive female, Lennay Kekua.
Kekua had a really rough fake life.
In the summer of 2012, she was in a terrible fake car accident that sent her to the hospital for months, where she was diagnosed with fake cancer. Tuiasosopo finally killed off Kekua in September of last year on the same day that Te’o's real grandmother died.
Te’o's tragic story made him a media darling, until it was discovered that Lennay Kekua never actually existed. His bizarre story then made him fodder for late-night talk hosts and “Saturday Night Live” sketches.
It’s been a while since anyone has made a joke about Te’o's fake ex-girlfriend, so thanks for reminding us, Maxim!
