Mansfield University baseball splits double-header, as Scott turns in a 4-hit day

SHIPPENSBURG, P.A. (WETM) – Mansfield baseball spilt a double-header with Shippensburg, as one Horseheads grad turned in an impressive day at the plate.

Mansfield University baseball split a double-header with Shippensburg, on Monday. The Mountaineers opened the day on the road, with an 8-3 win over the Raiders. Mansfield’s offense wasted no time jumping ahead, taking an 8-run lead by the 6th inning. The offensive explosion was headlined by strong hitting from Ryan Verbonitz, Cole Serfass, and Horseheads grad Ryan Scott. Verbonitz went (2-4) with 4 RBI, while Serfass went a perfect (3-3) with 2 runs, and an RBI. Scott added a run, going a season-best (3-5) with 3 singles. Harold Ivery and Jefferey Coakley also tallied runs for the Mounties.

Senior pitcher Ryan King earned the win for Mansfield, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings. King totaled 4 strikeouts in the effort. Alex Bucolo and Luke Payne closed out the game, combining for 3 strikeouts in 2 innings of work.

Shippensburg rebounded, taking the 2nd game 13-4. Carter Arbuthnot opened the scoring for the Raiders, with 2 RBI in the 1st. One inning later, Gio Calamia blasted a 3-run home run as part of a monster day at the plate. In addition to the home run, Calamia went (3-4) with 3 runs and 5 RBI. The Mounties closed the Raider’s lead to 6-4 by the 5th inning, with runs from Zachary Shetzer, Serfass, and Coakley. Despite the Mounties effort, Shippensburg pulled away with a strong effort at the plate. Caleb Newcomer added his only RBI of the day, before Calamia followed up with another on a single. Brady Harbach would close out the win for the Raiders with a 6th inning grand slam.

Shertzer led the Mounties offense, going (2-3) with 2 RBI, and a run. Scott picked up a hit, a walk, and an RBI.

Mansfield returns to the diamond for a home and home series against Millersville. The Mounties head to Millersville for a Friday double-header, before hosting the Marauders for 2 Saturday games. The opening games on both days are slated for a 12 p.m. start.
