Man's drunk driving charges dropped after docs discover his rare condition

A Belgian man has been cleared of drunk-driving charges after it was revealed that his body naturally produces alcohol internally. Three separate medical examinations confirmed him to be suffering from auto-brewery syndrome (ABS). The man remains unnamed but is known to work at a brewery, adding an ironic twist to his situation, as noted by his lawyer Anse Ghesquiere. The verdict emphasized that the defendant did not exhibit any symptoms of intoxication despite the presence of alcohol in his system. ABS is an extremely rare condition that can develop in individuals with certain intestinal-related disorders. While those affected produce alcohol similar to that found in alcoholic beverages, they typically experience reduced effects from it. However, symptoms of ABS can mimic those of alcohol intoxication, including slurred speech, impaired motor skills and dizziness.
