Manitoba mom who killed child testifies at inquest into girl's death

WINNIPEG - A woman who smothered her two-year-old daughter at a Winnipeg women's shelter testified on the first day of an inquest into the girl's death.

Nicole Redhead is serving 12 years for killing her daughter, Jaylene, in 2009.

She told the inquest Tuesday that she regained custody of Jaylene from Child and Family Services while she was living at the Native Women's Transition Centre.

Redhead told the inquiry she got no help from staff to raise her daughter, but did not specify what help she asked for.

During Redhead's trial, court heard she held her hand over her daughter's mouth until Jaylene stopped breathing and then put her back in her crib.

The inquest is seeking to find answers about what, if anything, could have been done to prevent the girl's death.
