Manistique trades teacher found dead in home

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WJMN) — A teacher who did not show up for work on Monday to his classroom in Manistique has died.

The superintendent of Manistique Area Schools made the announcement Monday afternoon that Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District Career-Technical Education (DSISD CTE) Building Trades Teacher Kevin Brown had not showed up for work that morning, and had not notified the school of his absence.

As a result, an administrator sent someone to check on him at his house. We’re told that’s how the school learned Mr. Brown was found dead in his home, after which the district consulted its Crisis Response Plan.

The plan included assembling 9th-12th grade students in the auditorium to inform them of the news. The district has also brought mental health providers into the building to support anyone who needed them.

A sergeant with Michigan State police confirmed to Local 3 that investigators believe Brown died of natural causes, but due to his death being unattended, they are waiting for the coroner’s report before closing the investigation.

The Manistique superintendent said anyone looking for support related to Brown’s death can call the school at 906-341-4300, where staff will help connect them to a mental health worker.
