What is the team news?

Defender Phil Jones is likely to miss the match after picking up a hip injury in Manchester United's goalless draw with Hull City.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has not played since the Hull game after coming down with an illness. Despite being named on the bench for Manchester United's 2-0 win over Watford at the weekend, the club's record goalscorer is not expected to feature.

After spending most of the season out of favour with Jose Mourinho, Bastian Schweinsteiger could feature after he was added to Manchester United's updated squad list for the knockout stages.

England left back Luke Shaw will play no part in the matchday squad after Jose Mourinho called on the former Southampton defender to "keep working" for a place in the team.

"I don't have any problem and he's working well. He's fighting hard, there is no problem with him. He has to work and wait."

"He’s not playing tomorrow because my team is playing well,’ said Mourinho in his press conference.

"I'm happy with my back four and I’m going to repeat: Valencia, Bailly, Smalling and Daley Blind."

What have they been saying?

Jose Mourinho has admitted he is concerned Manchester United will face an end of season fixture pile up if the club progress to the latter stages of the Europa League.

“We cannot chose competitions at Manchester United, we know our situation is really complicated,”

“We know that the Europa League is also a competition where we play on Thursday and then makes it even more difficult with the accumulation of FA Cup and League Cup games and the match postponement. If we progress we will be in trouble come May.

“But we cannot choose and we play competition to win. It’s also a good way to give the team experience and international experience is always a plus.

"The Europa League is not a competition we want to play but we play and respect it. We showed that in group stage where we worked hard to progress, there was a moment where was hard for us because we lost two away matches.

“If you ask me if I want to beat St Etienne and progress in the competition I say yes. It will be difficult but we don’t throw away competitions. It is even harder now that match against Manchester City is postponed.

"If we win against Blackburn the [league] match against Southampton will also be postponed so in case this happens it’s going to create us many, many problems.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Telegraph's Jason Burt, St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier described Manchester United as 'the biggest club in the world' ahead of his side's trip to Old Trafford.

“For me, Manchester United is the biggest club in the world,” Galtier says. “It’s like a mountain. Mont Blanc. Himalayas. Big, big gap between Manchester and us. But I have my plan. Our objective is to still have hope for the game here [the second leg]," said Galtier.

“They will want to make the difference in the first game. They will want to finish it. I watch many games. It was difficult for them at the beginning of the season but now they are a strong team, a strong team physically as well, big, with a big organisation. As always with Mourinho. And Ibra is Ibra.”

Galtier also revealed he sees similarities between Manchester United's top goalscorer this season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and his friend, Eric Cantona.

“When I look at Ibra I think of Eric Cantona,” said Galtier.

"Big personality. He can get mad in one second, say big things, and then, ‘OK, I said it.' But, above all, an incredible player. And he scores. Goals, goals, goals. Lots of people said he would find it difficult in England but, already, 20 goals."
