A man with a knife and a gun was arrested at a school in Petershagen near the German capital Berlin on Friday morning.

Police said a security alarm had been triggered at the school at around 7:15 am (0615 GMT), when a man with a weapon was seen to have entered the school.

Specially trained emergency services then searched the school building and overpowered the man. A police spokesman said he had been arrested, and was found to have a firearm and a knife. It is not yet clear whether the weapon was capable of firing live ammunition.

The man was injured during the arrest, the spokesman said. No other injuries have been reported. It is not yet known whether and how many pupils were already in the building, but it's thought most of the people in the school at that time were members of staff.

The police cordoned off the school.
