Man Wanted to Propose in Aruba, But Couldn’t Afford It. After Winning the Lottery, They Can Finally Go

"I immediately called my wife, Paula, to tell her the news," Kevin Weaver told lottery officials

Although his plan on proposing to his wife in Aruba didn't pan out, after winning the lottery, an Illinois couple will finally be able to take a dream vacation together.

Fairview resident Kevin Weaver was taken be surprise after realizing he won a $1 million prize, according to lottery officials.

“I scratched the ticket in my truck in the parking lot of County Market, and I was in complete shock when I saw that I had won a million dollars. I immediately called my wife, Paula, to tell her the news," Weaver said. "She didn’t believe me until I scanned the ticket on my lottery app to prove it to her!"

Making his win even sweeter? One very exciting thing they'll get to do with his winnings.

“A few years ago I planned on taking Paula to Aruba, which was where I had planned to propose. The trip was too expensive, so we never got to go," he added. "Well, you better believe we will definitely be going now!"

The man said that he also plans to get his wife a new minivan so she can drive their grandkids around "in style."

"Happy wife, happy life!” he added.

In November 2023, another Illinois resident had luck winning the $1 million scratch-off prize. A 68-year-old industrial mechanic purchased the winning $10 ticket at Harlem Food and Liquors in Harwood Heights, according to Illinois lottery officials.

The man, whom lottery officials refer to as “Mr. M,” said he “had a good gut feeling” about the ticket as soon as he saw it. “I chose to take a chance and buy it, and boy, am I glad I did,” he added.

Immediately after winning, Mr. M decided to retire, lottery officials shared. “I was going to retire next year - but now I don’t have to wait!” he said at the time. “It’s time I focus on what really matters — my family.”
