Man takes plea deal in 2023 stabbing death of his wife, a Las Vegas doctor working at UMC

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who was charged in the stabbing death of his wife a year ago agreed to a plea deal in Clark County District Court on Thursday.

Charges against Shiva Gummi, 34, were reduced to second-degree murder.

He took an Alford plea, which is when a defendant does not admit guilt, but does acknowledge there likely is enough evidence to cause a jury to reach a conviction.

Gummi was arrested in April 2023. He was charged with stabbing his wife, Dr. Gwen Amsrala, multiple times at the Las Vegas home they shared.

Amsrala graduated from the UNLV Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in 2022 and was doing her residency at UMC at the time.

Gummi’s sentencing is scheduled for May 23.
