Man suffers stab wound in fight at Belleville gas station, police say

A 34-year-old East St. Louis man suffered stab wounds during a fight with another man at a Belleville gas station Monday night, Belleville police said.

The victim is in serious condition in a St. Louis hospital.

The fight was over a woman both of the men knew, police said.

The suspect, who is a 43-year-old Belleville man, has not been located, Assistant Police Chief Mark Heffernan said in a statement Tuesday.

Heffernan said the victim had been in a bar in O’Fallon and was returning home in a vehicle with the suspect and witnesses. The vehicle stopped at the BP Amoco at 1257 Lebanon Ave., where the fight occurred.

“A knife was presented during the fight and the victim was injured,” Heffernan said in his statement. “It is not clear from witness accounts which subject initially produced the knife.”

The victim was first taken by private vehicle to Memorial Hospital in Belleville, where officers interviewed him. He was then taken to a St. Louis hospital.

The stabbing remains under investigation.
