Man who started Butch’s Bar fire in Sturgeon Bay sentenced to 15 years in prison

STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The man who started a fire above Butch’s Bar in Sturgeon Bay that killed two people and destroyed the building was sentenced to prison on Friday.

60-year-old Anthony Gonzalez from Sturgeon Bay was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 15 years of extended supervision after he was found guilty on two charges of second-degree reckless homicide and five counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Gonzalez spilled lighter fluid on his bed and then proceeded to light a cigarette, resulting in his bed starting on fire. Gonzalez denied being under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances during the incident and said he tried to get everyone out of the building.
