Man stabbed with screwdriver after he tries to stop passengers from stealing his car

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A woman was arrested on Tuesday in connection to a reported carjacking from Monday that left the driver injured, according to arrest documents from the Third District Court.

Mckyla Mischelle Renfort, 24, is facing charges of aggravated robbery, theft of a firearm or operable motor vehicle and unlawfully possessing the ID of another.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Renfort was one of two individuals involved in the alleged carjacking, with the other person being the man who reportedly stabbed the victim in the stomach with a screwdriver.

On Monday, the victim was giving a ride to Renfort and her male accomplice, according to the affidavit. When the driver made a stop, he got out of the car but left the keys and passengers in the vehicle, documents say.

The driver “observed the couple taking the keys, entering the front seats,” arrest documents say. After he saw that, the affidavit says he tried to stop the theft and opened the driver’s side door.

After the victim opened the door, the affidavit says the male suspect “grabbed a screwdriver and stabbed [the victim] in the stomach,” after which the victim reportedly backed away and the pair drove away in his car.

According to reports from Cottonwood Heights police, the victim got a message from Renfort, which reportedly said she took the car because the victim was communicating with police.

The day after the carjacking was reported, officers saw Renfort at a grocery store in Midvale and subsequently arrested her, the affidavit says. After the arrest, documents say police found her in possession of a California driver’s license belonging to a victim of a previous Salt Lake carjacking.

Documents say the victim identified Renfort “due to his relationship with her,” but documents did not disclose the nature of their relationship.

Renfort was booked into the Salt lake County Jail.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
