Man stabbed at Harrisburg homeless encampment

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM)– A man is stable and expected to recover after a stabbing at a homeless encampment in Harrisburg over the weekend.

Officials are now wondering what to do about that encampment, which is along Market Street under the rail bridges in downtown Harrisburg.

Harrisburg City spokesman Matt Maisel says these questions are becoming more pressing because time is ticking before the I-83 expansion would displace an encampment along the river one way or the other.

Maisel says the city hopes to “come up with something that is going to treat people with respect while also being mindful of the fact that as we approach spring, as we approach summer, there are numerous, on an almost daily basis, permitted events that take place in Riverfront Park.”

Maisel said organizations like Christian Churches United and Downtown Daily Bread will be important parts of any plan.
