Man shot and killed outside apartment building in Bridgeview: police

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Police are investigating a deadly shooting outside an apartment building in southwest suburban Bridgeview.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. Wednesday near 79th and Oketo Avenue, next to the Bridgeview Community Center. Police said 39-year-old Arturo Cantu was leaving for work and in the building’s parking lot when he was shot multiple times.

According to police, Cantu was found with a knife in his hand when officers responded to the scene, so perhaps he saw the suspect approaching him. The victim was able to make it to the entrance of the building before he collapsed and died.

Cantu lived inside the apartment building with his girlfriend.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear at this time. Police have not provided a description of the suspect.

Bridgeview Police Chief Ricardo Mancha told WGN News on Wednesday that detectives are working to learn what led to the deadly shooting.

“He was coming out of his house. He was confronted by another individual. We don’t know the motive at this time,” Ricardo said.

Homicides are not something the southwest suburban Chicago community is accustomed to, Ricardo added.

“This is a rarity,” he said. “I think this is our first shooting in over a year.”

No one is in custody. Police believe this to be an isolated incident. An investigation is underway.
