Man who shot himself during North Scranton standoff dies

Jun. 7—A city man who shot himself Monday after a nearly four-hour standoff with police in North Scranton died from his injuries.

Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland said the 66-year-old man died of the self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His death has been ruled a suicide, the coroner said.

Officers responded to a home in the 1800 block of Clearview Street shortly before 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report that a man harmed himself, followed soon after by a call about a man firing a gun inside the home.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man as he stood outside the home with a handgun before police say he shot himself shortly after noon.
