Man shot during car theft, suspect detained

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 22-year-old is facing a slew of charges after Memphis Police say he shot a man and stole his car in southwest Memphis Thursday.

Jaylen Simpson, 22, is charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Theft of Property $2,500 or less to with Firearm, Reckless Driving, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Evading Arrest on Foot, and Employment of a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 3400 block of West Horn Lake Road just before 8 a.m. A man was located on the scene and transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Police say Simpson shot the victim and drove off in his 2017 Kia Cadenza.

A little before 9 a.m., the car was found in the area of Kimball and Pendleton. Officers saw the car and tried to stop it, but Simpson reportedly sped off.

The car came to a stop in the 2200 block of Lamar Avenue. Simpson fled the scene on foot with his backpack.

According to reports, officers caught Simpson on Arlington Road. When they searched his backpack, they found a gun that was stolen from a car on May 4, 2024.

Jaylen Simpson is set to appear in court on May 20.
