Man shot, dog killed followed by frantic two-parish police chase in Louisiana

Police say a Ville Platte man ditched a stolen car at a Lecompte restaurant and stole another car after fighting with the owner, shooting that person in an arm and killing a dog inside the car before fleeing into Allen Parish, where he was captured the next morning, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office.

The suspect Kearrious Marquez McCoy, 24, remains in custody in Allen Parish on a hold from Rapides investigators.

An investigation is continuing, but the sheriff's office issued a news release Tuesday afternoon that said it began Saturday night before 10 p.m. The sheriff's office was called around 10 p.m. to help the Lecompte Police Department with what first was reported as a disturbance, it reads.

Police accuse McCoy of arriving at the restaurant in a vehicle reported stolen from Evangeline Parish. Witnesses said McCoy got out of that vehicle and pulled out a firearm to get another driver out of their vehicle, according to the release.

"According to the victim, McCoy then pointed the firearm at the victim, but it failed to fire," it reads. "The victim and the suspect then engaged in a physical altercation, which resulted in the victim being shot in the arm."

McCoy then allegedly fired at three other people and shot a dog in the vehicle of the victim who was shot.

"One of the victims returned fire, causing McCoy to run away, " it reads.

Police accuse McCoy of stealing the shooting victim's care and driving toward Forest Hill on Louisiana 112. A deputy spotted McCoy driving southbound on U.S. 165 and tried to stop him, but McCoy did not, reads the release.

The chase continued into Allen Parish with Rapides and Allen sheriff deputies and officers from the McNary, Glenmora, Oakdale, Coushatta and Kinder police departments involved. Police say McCoy tried to ram officers, but the stolen vehicle was disabled by the Kinder Police Department.

But police say McCoy ran on foot, eluding officers until Sunday around 9 a.m. when he was found near some railroad tracks. He was arrested after a "brief struggle," it reads.

A firearm was found with him.

He was arrested on charges of resisting an officer, illegal carrying of a weapon and criminal trespassing in Allen Parish.

Once he is transferred to Rapides Parish, police say he will be booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center #1 on seven counts of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, two counts of attempted carjacking, two counts of aggravated criminal damage to property, carjacking, aggravated cruelty to animals and aggravated flight from an officer.

He also is wanted on charges in St. Landry and Evangeline parishes, according to the release.

Anyone with information about McCoy is asked to contact Detective Jacob Hicks at 318-473-6727, the sheriff office's main number at 318-473-6700 or Crime Stoppers at 318-443-7867.
