Man seriously injured in crash with Amazon truck remains hospitalized

The man seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday on State Road 40 East remains hospitalized.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the victim is in critical condition at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

Authorities have identified the individual only as a 38-year-old man from Astor. The FHP no longer provides names of people involved in vehicle crashes.

Speaking with the man's family members, troopers were told the victim was on his way to Ocala for an unknown reason when the crash happened.

The driver of the second vehicle, an Amazon semitractor-trailer, is a 31-year-old man from Apopka, troopers said. He was not injured, and voluntarily gave a blood sample for testing. Usually in bad wrecks involving serious injuries or deaths, troopers request a blood sample.

Impounded

According to investigators, the injured man was driving a Chrysler Town & Country minivan west on SR 40. The Amazon semitractor-trailer was eastbound on the same roadway.

FHP officials said the minivan crossed the double yellow line and struck the semitractor-trailer. The truck went off the roadway and into a ditch. Marion County Fire Rescue officials had to extricate the minivan driver.

Authorities said the minivan driver was driving erratically. A witness told a Star-Banner reporter he and his wife were driving behind the minivan and the driver would slow down and then speed up.

The witness said the confusing driving went on for multiple miles. At times, the witness said, the minivan crossed into the opposite lane. Before the crash, the witness said, the minivan ran off the road and almost crashed into the woods.

Troopers said the truck driver was transporting Amazon products from Gainesville to Daytona. As part of the investigation, FHP officials said the trailer has been impounded.

The investigation is ongoing.
