Man sentenced in Shunga Trail assault case

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for an assault that happened in the southwest portion of Topeka’s Shunga Trail last year.

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) started an investigation on Aug. 17 regarding an incident reported to Shawnee County Park Police on Aug. 15. Jose J. Arteaga, 30, of Topeka was accused of assaulting an individual on the trail, resulting in transportation to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, April 1 Arteaga was sentenced to:

  • Attempted Rape – 89 months in prison

  • Attempted Rape – 55 months in prison, consecutive

  • Aggravated Battery – 38 months in prison, consecutive

  • Sexual Battery – 12 months in prison, concurrent

In total, Arteaga was sentenced to 182 months in prison with credit for time served. He must register as an offender, he is prohibited from carrying a firearm and must be under lifetime post-release supervision.
