Man sentenced for shooting death of young mother

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids man who shot a young mother through her front door will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Keyante Newbern was sentenced Monday to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of Mya Kelly.

It happened the day after Christmas in 2022 at a duplex on Canton Street near S. Division Avenue. Kelly was with her two children when the bullet struck her in the head. The children were not injured.

Newbern’s attorney argued there was no evidence that Newbern fired the deadly shot.

A Kent County jury found Newbern guilty or first-degree murder last month.
