Man sentenced in Alton murder-for-hire plot

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – An East Alton, Illinois, man appeared in Madison County Circuit Court on Tuesday and was sentenced for orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot.

In April, Lorenzo D. Miller, 42, was convicted of solicitation of murder and obstructing justice after a three-day trial.

Prosecutors said Miller requested an acquaintance shoot his ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him.

The shooting happened on March 26, 2023, on Brown Street in Alton. Several shots rang through the house. One bullet strafed a sweater worn by a friend of the victim, lightly grazing her torso.

Days after the shooting, the ex-girlfriend’s van was torched outside her home. She feared someone was trying to lure her outside to kill her, prosecutors said.

Alton police used license plate readers to identify a vehicle with Missouri license plates in the vicinity at both the time of the shooting and the fire. That vehicle belonged to Miller’s acquaintance, later identified as Vernon McIntosh, 38.

Police also acquired phone data showing both Miller and McIntosh were communicating in the minutes before and after the shooting.

Miller was sentenced to 29 years for solicitation of murder and three years for obstructing justice. The sentences will run concurrently.

McIntosh was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and arson. He is still awaiting trial.
