Man sentenced in 2023 overdose death of his coworker in Monroe County

A man has pled guilty and been sentenced on charges relating to the overdose death of a coworker in Monroe County.

According to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, 39-year-old Edwin Burgos pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl and criminal use of a communication facility on Tuesday in connection to the March 2023 overdose death of Steven Nitschke, 33, of Stroud Township.

Burgos was arrested in August 2023 after evidence showed he delivered the dose to Nitschke that would eventually kill him.

Burgos was sentenced to four to 10 years in prison, with 12 years of probation afterward, by Monroe County Court of Common Pleas Court Judge Stephen Higgins. The case was investigated by the DA’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division with Detective Kim Lippincott leading the investigation, as well as the Stroud Area Regional Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Chad Martinez.
