Man sentenced for 2022 Shawnee deadly shooting

SHAWNEE, Kan. — A man charged in connection to the 2022 Shawnee, Kansas deadly shooting of 25-year-old Jarod Rogers has been sentenced.

Johnson County District Judge Christina Dunn Gyllenborg sentenced 19-year-old Fernando Reyes-Lara on Wednesday to 33 years and four months in prison.

Reyes-Lara was sentenced to 285 months for the second-degree intentional murder charge and 61 and 115 months for the two aggravated robbery charges. The sentences in each case will run consecutively. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to the three charges.

One man dead after shooting in Kansas City Wednesday morning

On Nov. 30, 2022, officers responded to a parking lot near Johnson Drive and Nieman Road for a welfare check around 6:30 p.m.

When officers arrived on the scene they found Rogers suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The following day, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, Olathe Police Department, and Shawnee Police Department were involved in a chase connected to the shooting.

On Dec. 2, 2022, Shawnee police learned that someone involved in the shooting turned themselves in at the Kansas City, Kansas, South Patrol Station and was taken into custody.
