Man sentenced to 17 years in deadly 2020 shooting over card game, solicitor says

FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — An Effingham man pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter after shooting another person in 2020 following a card game, according to Ed Clements with the twelfth circuit solicitor’s office said.

Jimmy McGregor Johnson, 48, was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Johnson was charged with murder, but Johnson’s charge was changed to manslaughter, Clements said.

The game was held on O’Hara Drive in Florence, and it turned into a verbal altercation before shots were fired, killing Lee William Woodberry, Jr., 34 of Hemingway, according to authorities.

Johnson is further alleged to have fled the scene following the shooting, deputies said.
