ELYRIA, Ohio (WJW) — A man was rescued from underneath a bridge early Saturday morning, the Elyria Fire Department said.

Elyria police reportedly called firefighters around 3 a.m. after a man they were chasing on foot jumped into the Black River. Police told them the man was able to get out of the water and was stuck under the Lake Avenue Bridge.

Police had deployed a drone to find the victim, who was wedged into a crevice and was injured.

Upon arrival, firefighters said they issued a rope rescue to pull the man up. The man was taken to University Hospitals Elyria for treatment on his leg.

It was unclear what led to the chase in the first place. No one else was reported injured in the incident.

“It was a great team effort between Elyria Safety Forces to successfully rescue the victim with limited visibility and the dangerous river currents,” the department said in a statement.
