SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Buk Muwat Buk, the man accused of murdering Ute football player Aaron Lowe, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of first-degree felony attempted murder on Monday, March 11.

Lowe was shot and killed in September 2021 during a house party near 2200 South Broadmoor Street in Sugar House. The District Attorney’s Office said an argument began between Lowe and some other people at the party which escalated to Buk eventually shooting Lowe and a then-20-year-old woman.

Lowe, who was a sophomore at the University of Utah and played as a cornerback, died on the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for multiple injuries.

Buk fled the scene after the shooting but was taken into custody in Draper on Oct. 3, 2021. He later pleaded not guilty to the charges of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and obstruction of justice.

As part of his change in plea, the charges of possession and obstruction of justice have been dismissed. A sentencing for Buk will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024.

“This act of violence shook the Salt Lake County community when it happened. Mr. Lowe was not only a well-known star athlete at the University of Utah but he was a beloved friend, son and brother,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. “Though perfect justice would mean that Mr. Lowe was alive and the other victim did not have to live with injuries that will last a lifetime, we hope this conviction helps the loved ones of Mr. Lowe and the second victim feel they have received some measure of justice.”

Lowe’s memory lives on at the Univesity of Utah, more than two years after his tragic death. The University established the Aaron Lowe Memorial Scholarship to honor the football star. Shortly after the shooting, Utah head football coach Kyle Whittingham said he would retire the jersey No. 22, which belonged to Lowe.
