Man pleads guilty to manslaughter in shooting outside of Sheffield restaurant

SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) — A Muscle Shoals man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection to a 2021 shooting outside of Jokers’ Indian Kitchen.

James Terrell Whiteside, 40, from Muscle Shoals was charged with manslaughter for the killing of 26-year-old Kalyn Tyjuane Horrison of Florence on December 3, 2021.

Whiteside was set to go to trial on February 12, 2024, but on February 2, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, split to serve five years in prison.

Sheffield Police Department Chief Ricky Terry said Horrison was taken to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition and passed away from his injuries Friday afternoon.

Chief Terry said the other two victims, one being the business’s security guard, were transported to local hospitals where they were listed in stable condition.

Investigators believe the altercation began inside the restaurant but escalated outside the business.

Whiteside was taken to the Colbert County Jail following the incident with his bond set at $30,000. He bonded out in October 2022.

In August 2022, a Colbert County Grand Jury indicted Whiteside for Horrison’s death, “due to a sudden heat of passion caused by provocation.”
