Man who killed wife in 2011 to be sentenced in DC
WASHINGTON (AP) — A German expatriate convicted of killing his socialite wife will learn how long he has to spend in prison for her 2011 murder in Washington.
Albrecht Muth is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in District of Columbia Superior Court. Prosecutors have asked for a life sentence.
Muth, 49, had pretended to be an Iraqi army general and often boasted of political and diplomatic connections. He was convicted in January of killing his wife, Viola Drath. The 91-year-old German writer and socialite was found dead in the couple's row home in Washington's posh Georgetown neighborhood in August 2011.
Muth told police his wife had fallen, but the medical examiner's office concluded that her death was a homicide. A jury found that Drath's beating and strangulation death was especially heinous and cruel.
