Man Killed by Shark in Cape Cod Joked About Being Shark-Proof Before Death: 'Sharks Don't Bite Me'
The aunt of a man who was killed by a shark over the weekend said he joked about being shark-proof before his untimely death.
Arthur Medici, 26, was in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, visiting his aunt, Marisa Medici, when he got bitten by a shark while boogie boarding near Newcomb Hollow in Wellfleet, his aunt told the Boston Herald.
Marisa said she often worried about her nephew, who grew up in Brazil and moved to the U.S. for college, and had asked him repeatedly not to swim in the shark-infested waters, but he always lightheartedly joked about it.
“Sharks don’t bite me. I’m Superman," she said he told her.
"And when it happened, I couldn’t believe it was him, that it happened to us. There’s no words. No words," Marisa added.
Arthur's friend, Isaac Rocha, was with him at the time of the attack and said he dragged his friend the 35 yards to shore and tried to tie his boogie board strap to Arthur's wound to stop the bleeding.
“I saw him go down and then I saw him go back up and saw a lot of blood and he was screaming,” Rocha told the Today show. “I got him onto shore and he wasn’t moving anymore."
Arthur died at a Cape Cod hospital Saturday, his family told the Boston Herald. It was the first deadly shark attack in the area in nearly 80 years in Massachusetts.
His family has set up a GoFundMe for his funeral service. So far, they've raised nearly $30,000.
“He was always joyful and willing to help others, even going as far as feeding the homeless,” the page read. “He was happily engaged to a smart, kind-hearted medical student with a bright future. Our lives are are never going to be the same without him.”
