Man killed in Newport News shooting; suspect arrested

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after police say he shot and killed a man in Newport News Sunday night.

Jayquan Phillips is facing charges of murder, shooting into an occupied building, assault, possession of a firearm by a felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Police responded to the 900 block of 37th Street at 11:49 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Officers at the scene found a man in a residence with a gunshot wound.

Shawn Grayson, 31, of Newport News, was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m., according to police.

Phillips was initially detained by police following the shooting as a “person of interest.” He was known to the victim.

The investigation is ongoing, but police are not looking for additional suspects, said Kelly King, spokesperson for Newport News police.
