Man killed in New Castle shooting

A man was killed in a shooting in New Castle on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the 1400 block of East Washington Street at 4:17 p.m.

Once on scene, police found a man dead on the back porch. He was shot in the chest.

“I was shocked when I heard the guns go off,” said neighbor John Donofrio.

Donofrio lives at a care home a few doors down. He walks along East Washington every day. He said he heard the gunfire and saw a helicopter circling the area.

”I was getting ready to walk down here and I heard the gunshots,” said Donofrio.

Police chief Dave Cumo said preliminary evidence indicates that a group of young adults were outside being loud. A neighbor allegedly got angry and shot at them several times. At least one person in the group shot at the neighbor.

“Just a sad situation,” said Raymond Rice.

Rice said he was friends with the man who passed away. He also said its normally quiet in this part of town.”That never happens in this neighborhood. This is a pretty safe neighborhood. You don’t hear gunshots like that at all. I think that’s way people were in a panic,” said Rice.

There are still many questions about what happened. New Castle police are working on the case and the chief said they it’s an ongoing investigation.
