Man Who Killed His Baby and Woman Over Custody Payment Is Sentenced to Prison

Enoch Turner, 25, was found guilty Saturday of first-degree murder, aggravated arson, aggravated child abuse and aggravated burglary

A Tennessee man has been convicted of fatally stabbing a mother and the pair's 4-month-old son.

Enoch Turner, 25, was found guilty Saturday of first-degree murder, aggravated arson, aggravated child abuse and especially aggravated burglary in the deaths of 32-year-old Heather Cook and 4-month-old son Bentley. Turner was the father of the infant.

Prosecutors in Shelby County said Turner killed Cook and Bentley after Cook planned to establish paternity. Cook and Bentley were found dead Sept. 13, 2019, in their upstairs bedroom at their Southeast Shelby County home.

Prosecutors said Turner broke into the home and stabbed Cook and Bentley prior to a scheduled paternity test. Cook was stabbed more than 100 times. Bentley was stabbed 10 times. Turner then set the house on fire.

Cook’s sister found the mother and son inside the home, which was filled with smoke, according to a police affidavit previously obtained by PEOPLE.

Per the affidavit, Turner allegedly admitted his car was parked outside the home, but claimed he found Cook and her son dead when he went inside.

“[Turner] changed his story several times but admitted to entering the victim’s residence through the back window in the early morning hours of Sept. 13,” the affidavit said. “[Turner] stated he found [Cook and Bentley] deceased in the upstairs bedroom.”

He was picked up by police the same day. Prosecutors said they were pursuing the death penalty, but after his conviction agreed to two consecutive life sentences without the chance of parole.

Cook’s family members also approved of the life sentences, prosecutors said.

“He will never be released from jail,” Deputy District Attorney Paul Hagerman said. “The family wants everyone to remember that being a mom meant everything to Heather, and even though Bentley only lived four months, everyone could tell that his mom meant everything to him. It has always been our mission to ensure that Turner never gets out of jail.”

Turner’s attorney could not be reached for comment.
