Man Investigated For Boston Marathon Bombing Sues Glenn Beck For Defamation

In the days following last year’s bombing at the Boston Marathon, federal investigators looked into, and then cleared, Abdulrahman Alharbi of any wrongdoing in regards to the events. That didn’t stop Glenn Beck and his news outlet, The Blaze, from continuing to harp on Alharbi, a Saudi Arabian student, anyway.

In documents filed last Friday, Alharbi’s lawyers state that, “On and after April 15, Beck broadcast repeated statements distributed and published to others…identifying Alharbi as an active participant in the crimes that were committed in Boston,” and that “Beck falsely accused Alharbi of being a criminal who had funded the attacks that took place at the Boston Marathon…the statements made by Beck were false.”

Alharbi sustained minor injuries in the attack and was questioned in the hospital. In addition, investigators, with his consent, raided his apartment. His address, photo, and online social media presence began to circulate. The Blaze continued to harp on the one-time person of interest even after the Tsarnaevs had been identified as the alleged bombers.

Despite being cleared of involvement, Alharbi claims that Beck “repeatedly and falsely accused Mr. Alharbi of being a criminal who had funded the attacks that took place at the Boston marathon. Those statements were made widely and publicly. The statements were false and caused grave injury to the plaintiff.” Alharbi told one publication that he feared for his life at certain points.
