A suspect in a shooting that led to the death of a motel employee in Titusville Wednesday morning was taken to a local hospital after police shot him, officials said.

Titusville police responded just before 11 a.m. Wednesday to the Siesta Motel off South Washington Avenue regarding a report of a shooting, where they found Daniel Aaron Wade, 64, of Titusville, who had been shot, according to a release by the agency. Wade, an employee of the motel, died a short time later.

Officers spotted the suspect, whose description had been given to them by a witness, moments later in a vehicle on Forest Road, police said. When they attempted to detain him, the man, whose name has not been released by police, raised a handgun. A Titusville police officer, who also has not been identified, discharged his gun, though police said that multiple witnesses said they saw the suspect shoot himself in the head during the incident. Investigators believe the wound was self-inflicted.

The suspect was taken to a local unspecified hospital in critical condition.

An initial investigation found that the man had been staying in a room at the motel and at some point, he approached Wade, who at the time was sitting in a courtyard with a female worker, police said. The man shot Wade, then attempted to shoot the woman, though his gun appeared to have jammed, allowing her time to run away. The suspect fled in his vehicle.

No officers were injured, police said. A separate administrative investigation will take place because an officer discharged his weapon, and details will be released when it has been concluded.

The suspect faces "numerous charges," police said, though they did not say what those charges were.
