Man injured after being trapped near Snowden Dam in Big Island

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Multiple Emergency Service teams assisted in a technical rescue off US-501 in the Big Island area of Bedford County on Friday, May 24.

Amherst County Pubic Safety Officer Brad Beam told WFXR News on the scene that crews received a call at around noon on a report for a person who had sustained an industrial-type injury. Crews arrived and found a man trapped inside a confined space over water and had fallen 15 feet.

Beam reports multiple agencies were called to assist with the rescue, including the Lynchburg, Monelision Volunteer, and Big Island Volunteer Fire Departments. Bedford Fire’s Special Operations Tactical Team was also on the scene with rescue boats in case a water evacuation was needed.

Crews used a technical rescue approach to get the patient out, using rope systems to get the man out of the small space and specialized boards to stabilize him. Units were on scene for around two hours, working to extract the patient.

Beam reports the man sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his leg and was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment.
