Man hospitalized following officer-involved shooting near Liberty High School

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man is in the hospital Wednesday morning following an officer-involved shooting in northwest Bakersfield.

The shooting happened in a neighborhood just down the street from Liberty High School in the 10000 block of Shellabarger Rd. The neighborhood is typically a quiet part of town, near Calloway and Brimhall Drives.

But Tuesday night a large presence could be seen as deputies and an unidentified man reported to be suffering with a mental health crisis and possibly had a firearm. Over the course of several hours, deputies said they arrived at the scene and tried several ways to de-escalate the tense situation.

According to KCSO, the man allegedly fired on deputies, then an officer-involved shooting happened.

No Sheriff’s Office personnel were injured and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. His current condition is unknown.
