Man holds 3 children hostage during Upstate standoff, police say

GAFFNEY, S.C. (WSPA) – A man is accused of holding three children hostage Wednesday evening in the Upstate.

According to the Gaffney Police Department, officers responded at 8:33 p.m. to the 600 block of Willow Street about a 911 hang-up call.

A woman told dispatchers that she needed the police and laid the phone down.

Dispatchers continued to listen and relay information to responding officers.

Several minutes into the call, officers were told that a man had a gun and was holding an infant. The police department said there were two other children in the house.

Once at the scene, the man, later identified as Ryan Anthony Lyles, 31, of Spartanburg, refused to exit the house or release the other victims.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the scene and the negotiator began communicating with Lyles through the front window.

The police department said around 11:33 p.m., Lylers released the victims and was arrested.

He was charged with first-degree domestic violence with other charges pending.

He is currently being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
