Man gets prison in fatal shooting of Akron woman

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — An Akron man is headed to prison for the August shooting death of a woman at a south side home.

Dakinga York, 41, of Akron, was indicted in September on counts of murder, voluntary manslaughter, felonious assault, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence in the Aug. 12 shooting death of 45-year-old Veronica Bell, of Akron, at a home in the 2200 block of 8th Street Southwest.

Investigators learned there was a fight inside the home. York then shot her, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Akron police and EMS workers found Bell laying on the ground outside the home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died days later.

York left the scene after the shooting and was considered to be a person of interest early in the investigation, according to authorities. He turned himself in the day after her death to face the murder charge. He was set for trial on Tuesday, May 7, court records show.

As part of a plea deal, York pleaded guilty on Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. The murder and felonious assault charges were dropped.

A Summit County judge immediately sentenced York to serve 15 to 20 1/2 years in prison.
