Man gets 3 years in deadly shooting outside Bakersfield banquet hall

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in a 2021 shooting outside a Bakersfield banquet hall.

Court records show Joan Luevano already has enough custody credits to fulfill that term.

Prosecutors dismissed murder and other charges after Luevano agreed to plead no contest last month.

Early April 18, 2021, surveillance video captured two men fighting outside Destiny’s Banquet Hall. The video shows one man pull a gun from his front waistband and chamber a round, according to a court filing. He points the gun at the other man and fires.

Jose Araujo, 39, suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was later pronounced dead at Kern Medical.

The shooter, identified as Luevano, placed the gun back in his waistband and drove off from the banquet hall on White Lane in a gray Lexus, according to the filing. He was arrested in October 2021.
