Man gets 17 years for deadly motel stabbing

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in a fatal stabbing at a Bakersfield motel was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in prison, according to court records.

David Nutt, 52, pleaded no contest last month to stabbing Moses Lee Campbell, 47, at La Mirage Motel on May 18. Campbell suffered a stab wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation launched after man was found dead in a Planet Fitness parking lot in central Bakersfield: BPD

A motel resident told police she heard a fight during which a man said, “You done (expletive) up now.”

Another person told police he witnessed the stabbing, which occurred just outside a room as Campbell leaned against a railing. He said the suspect walked downstairs and east toward Union Avenue.

Nutt was taken into custody without incident about 30 minutes later, according to police reports. A large kitchen knife was found on a roof near the motel, the reports say.
