MPD: Man shot in the head and chest while sleeping, teen arrested

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a Parkway Village man was found shot to death in bed Tuesday after he failed to show up for work.

Investigators said Javodrick Gordon appeared to have been shot in the head and chest while he was sleeping inside his home in the 4800 block of Cloister Avenue. They said a relative made the gruesome discovery.

Police said Gordon’s 1017 Infiniti QX80 was missing from his home, and they tracked it to the 3800 block of East Shelby Drive in Southeast Memphis.

They said the driver behind the wheel, later identified as Montrell Kinds, 17, ran from police and bailed out of the vehicle in the 4000 block of Baywind Circle.

Investigators said Kinds admitted to being in Gordon’s home and taking his car.

Detectives said Kinds told them he and Gordon were fighting in the bedroom when he found the gun under Gordon’s pillow. Kinds said they struggled over the weapon, and it went off.

Police said there were no signs of a struggle in the bedroom, and they found two spent shell casings near the bed.

It’s unclear why Kinds was in the home but he told police he called the victim because he needed a place to stay. Police said there was no sign of forced entry.

Kinds was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, murder in the perpetration of a felony, and intentionally evading an arrest in an automobile. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
