Man found guilty in 2021 fatal shooting in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Ind. — A man was found guilty of murder on Thursday for his role in a 2021 shooting that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old.

Investigators suspect Sean DeMarco Dixon fired the shots that killed Cameron Anderson as he drove his red Cadillac along Pendleton Pike near Sunnyside Road shortly after 1 p.m. July 5, 2021. Dixon was formally charged with murder Aug. 23, 2021, according to public court records, and was out on parole in connection to a handgun charge from 2015 at the time of the shooting.

Two days after the homicide in Lawrence, police found Dixon in a car with a woman who had a handgun following a check-in with the man's parole officer, who subsequently filed a violation. He was taken into the custody of the sheriff's office for that violation before being formally charged with murder.

Lawrence Police officers found Anderson on the ground outside his Cadillac suffering from a gunshot wound to his neck, investigators said in a probable cause affidavit. The car had been shot multiple times, and broken glass and multiple spent shell casings were inside the car. About 200 feet down the road, there were more shell casings and glass.

Anderson was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

Witnesses at the scene told investigators they were driving west on Pendleton Pike when they saw a man firing a handgun out the front window of a red Buick toward the Cadillac, according to the affidavit. The SUV left "at a high rate of speed."

Law enforcement officials at the time told IndyStar they believed the shooting occurred when Anderson was inside his car and heading east on Pendleton Pike. The shots came from someone outside the vehicle, they said — likely from another vehicle.

Dixon became a suspect when Anderson's relatives told investigators they heard through social media someone named “Ratchet” Dixon might have been involved. Detectives eventually determined Ratchet Dixon's real name was Sean DeMarco Dixon, according to the affidavit, and said recent photos of the man "closely resemble the physical description of the shooter."

Investigators indicated Anderson and Dixon knew each other, and Anderson might have returned fire during the shooting. Video from police dash cameras reportedly shows a red Buick Enclave with a bullet hole in the windshield driving away from the scene.

Police a couple of days after the shooting found the SUV at an Indianapolis auto shop, where the car's windshield was being replaced.

Records from Dixon's cellphone indicate the man was at the scene of the homicide at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit, as well as at the body shop where the windshield was going to get repaired.

Dixon's sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 8.
